Gorilla Statues & Sculptures

A gorilla is one of the few animals that reads as a presence rather than a creature. The upright posture, the shoulders, the scale of the hands: it occupies a room the way a person does, which is why a life-size silverback is one of the most commanding pieces you can put in a space and why it needs thinking about before you buy one.

The treatments here lean contemporary. Nearly seven in ten pieces are geometric, faceted into planes rather than modelled naturalistically, which suits the animal's blocky mass unusually well. Beyond that there are classical marble figures and a smaller pop art group in bold and chrome finishes. Resin and fibreglass do most of the making, with marble on around a fifth.

Scale is bimodal, which tells you how the range is bought: roughly a third sits at 30cm to 79cm for a shelf or console, and nearly six in ten stand at 130cm or above where the piece is doing something quite different.
